This artwork is based on a Celtic legend of fairies living beneath the mounds: they lure people inside to enjoy lavish feasts and dance away till dawn only to let them discover in the morning that the magic feast has lasted several hundred years, their friends and family are all dead, and the familiar world long gone. In Kartashov’s interpretation, this legend reverberates with the lifestyle of today’s youth that simultaneously inhabits not one, but two worlds: the real one, where we sleep, eat, come of age and grow old, and the virtual one, where we can create an unlimited amount of alternative personalities, inventing new images, characters, nicknames, and avatars. In the digital realm, a magical transformation makes us forget who we really are: we split into a myriad of separate entities and elements, living several lives at once.
The characters of the painting are enjoying a balmy evening in an idyllic setting. In the sunset light — a symbol of revival and renewal — they dance away to flute music, sprawl on the grass strewn with toys and flowers, and feel they have no reason to worry about their future.
L'opera prende spunto da una leggenda celtica delle fate che vivono nei tumuli e innescano i passanti. Dopo aver goduto di sontuosi banchetti e ballato fino all'alba le vittime si svegliano per scoprire che la festa durò parecchie centinaia di anni e nel frattempo tutti i loro cari erano morti e il mondo familiare sparì senza tracce. Per Kartashov questa fiaba sarebbe emblematica dello stile di vita dei giovani di oggi che abitano contemporaneamente non uno, ma due mondi: quello reale, dove dormono, mangiano, maturano e invecchiano con tutti noi, e quello virtuale, dove possono creare una moltitudine di personalità alternative, inventando nuove immagini, caratteri, soprannomi e avatar e dimenticando chi sono veramente: come per magia, si ramificano in miriadi di entità ed elementi separati, vivendo più vite contemporaneamente.
I personaggi del dipinto si godono una bella serata in un ambiente idillico. Nella luce del tramonto — simbolo di rinascita e rinnovamento — danzano al ritmo di un flauto, si sdraiano sull'erba cosparsa di fiori e giocattoli e non sembrano avere alcun motivo di preoccuparsi per il futuro.
